“Yellow Angel 2008” Award for Volkswagen’s Latest High-End Technologies for TSI Engine and DSG Technology
Prof Winterkorn: “The highly efficient combination of TSI and TDI with super automatic DSG transmission is the only system of its kind anywhere in the world”
Wolfsburg, 17 January 2008 - Volkswagen was today awarded the ADAC (German automobile club) “Yellow Angel 2008” prize. Europe’s most successful carmaker won the award in the category “Innovation and Environment” for the latest TSI engine and its new 7-speed DSG technology – a combination employed exclusively by Volkswagen. 7-speed DSG is available immediately in combination with the new 90-kW TSI engine or a 77-kW (105-PS) TDI for the Golf, Golf Estate, Golf Plus and Jetta.
Prof Martin Winterkorn, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, personally accepted the award in Munich. Speaking at the award ceremony, he said, "We have already sold more than one million cars with 6-speed DSG technology and in so doing have triggered a boom for automatic gearboxes. Thanks to DSG, a growing number of customers is choosing this intelligent automatic transmission even in compact-class cars. We have been running extra shifts at our components plant in Kassel to satisfy the demand. No wonder, given that this comfortable DSG technology is faster, more fuel efficient and sportier than any other gearbox technology. The highly efficient combination of TDI and TSI with super automatic DSG transmission is indisputably the only system of its kind anywhere in the world. We are now taking this success story to the next level with our new 7-speed DSG. And we are very honoured by the fact that the ADAC jury has clearly recognised the potential of this technology and awarded it the prize based on its sincere conviction."
This potential is ideally reflected in the combination of 7-speed DSG and a 90-kW (122-PS) TSI engine. While operation of the high-tech petrol engine in the Golf using a manual six-speed gearbox requires just 6.3 litres of unleaded super petrol per 100 kilometres, when coupled with 7-speed DSG technology, fuel consumption in that same Golf TSI comes down even lower to a mere 5.9 litres.
