Volkswagen Again Receives OKO-TREND Award

This time, the “Automobile Environment Certificate” goes to the Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion

Wolfsburg, 02 October 2007 - The Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion has been awarded the coveted “Automobile Environment Certificate” by ÖKO-TREND, an eco institute. With the highest scores in many of the categories that make up the criteria list, the fuel-efficient mid-class Volkswagen introduced this summer has been found to be one of the most environment-friendly automobiles of 2007. A total of four Volkswagen models have now received ÖKO-TREND awards within a single year. They include the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion, the VW Golf 1.4 TSI, the Volkswagen Touran EcoFuel and now the Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion.

The institute praised Volkswagen for successfully building an ecologically friendly long-distance automobile with a lot of transportation capacity. The vehicle’s BlueMotion features – identifiable by the logo on the tailgate and radiator grille – include a longer gear ratio in the third to fifth gears, reduced idle speed, enhanced underbody design for better aerodynamics and low-rolling-resistance tyres. The BlueMotion modifications have resulted in a reduction in fuel consumption in the saloon by 0.6 litres to only 5.1 litres and a reduction in CO2 emissions to 136 g/km, while the Passat estate BlueMotion runs on a mere 5.2 litres (a reduction of 0.7 litres) and emits 137 g/km CO2.

The next BlueMotion models (recently presented at the IAA in Frankfurt) are due to be launched soon as Volkswagen systematically expands the range of top-economy and top-environment-friendly versions from each vehicle series. The Golf BlueMotion is due on the market before year-end. It will be followed by the introduction of five further models, taking the total number of available Volkswagens with a BlueMotion label up to nine.
