SEAT’s Martorell Plant Celebrates 15 Years of Activity
THANKS TO THE ‘SEAT PRODUCTION SYSTEM’, ONE OF THE MOST PRODUCTIVE PLANTS IN EUROPE
Martorell, 22-02-2008 -- Today SEAT’s Martorell production plant commemorates its 15th anniversary. On February 22nd 1993 HRH King Juan Carlos I officially opened the Martorell factory, one of the most advanced of its day and which, with the passage of time, has become synonymous with modernity, innovation and technology – characteristics intrinsic to the brand, broadcasting its forward-looking spirit.
On the occasion of such an important event, SEAT Chairman Erich Schmitt highlighted “the substantial advances made by the manufacturing plant in terms of quality applied to the production process, as well as the improvement of productivity ratios, enable us to stoke up brand customer enthusiasm with the premium quality of its products. This achievement has been made possible thanks to the efforts and dedication of all employees, the company’s main asset”.
Innovation in the production processes, broader training for employees, and the use of state-of-the-art technology have enabled modernisation of the factory, where the assembly lines provide wide-ranging production versatility, and manufacture all models of the SEAT range, except for the Alhambra (made in Palmela, Portugal).
Over the past year, thanks to the implementation of the SEAT Excellence Program (SEP), the company has set up the SEAT production system in its manufacturing process. This is an innovative system aimed, amongts other things, at reducing production times for future SEAT models by 30%, which converts Martorell into one of the most efficient production plants in Europe.
Construction work on the SEAT factory, located some 30 kilometres north-west of Barcelona, started in February 1990 because of the company’s need to increase its production capacity, which until then had been concentrated in Barcelona’s Zona Franca facilities.
Initially designed for the production of 1,500 vehicles per day, the plant has now exceeded 2,000 units daily. The current strength of the workforce stands at 8,000 employees and covers a total surface area of almost three million square metres – the equivalent of 400 football fields.
