HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags Presented by COMP Cams in the Record Books
Weather-extended Pump Gas Drags won by Jim Plimpton of Franksville, Wisconsin in his supercharged ’89 Thunderbird
May 2008 -- Extreme engine temperatures and severe weather were unable to slow the efforts of Jim Plimpton and his impressive ’89 Thunderbird which took top honors at the fifth annual HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags sponsored by COMP Cams®. After hitting an incredible 300-degree engine temperature during the challenging 30-mile drive from COMP Cams® headquarters to the Memphis Motorsports Park, Plimpton ultimately converted that heat into power and cranked out a final round win. Plimpton’s supercharged, 572cid Ford-powered T-Bird recorded an impressive 8.536-seconds, 163.06 mph speed and defeated the ’70 red Nova of Ray Doughty, which logged a valiant 8.674 second, 160.14 mph effort.
The HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags is a unique event designed to challenge high performance race/street cars to not only pass a rigorous tech inspection and race on 93-octane Rockett Brand “pump” gas, but to drive from the tech inspection area at COMP Cams® corporate headquarters to the Memphis Motorsports Park (MMP) without the aid of support vehicles.
The two-day event was highlighted by the first ever Beale Street Bash at the Coyote Ugly Bar on the legendary Beale Street in downtown Memphis on Friday night, May 9. The Pump Gas Drags competition then kicked off on Saturday morning, May 10 and was extended to two days when severe weather shut down the race track after the first round of competition on Saturday. Racing resumed Sunday morning at 11 a.m. with four rounds of fast action culminating in the final race between Plimpton and Doughty.
The staff of COMP Cams® would like to thank all competitors and attendees for participating in the 5th Annual HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags – we hope you had as much fun as we did.
