Nissan’s “Monozukuri Caravan” Arrives in Tochigi and Fukuoka
TOKYO, June 19, 2008 – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the expansion of its successful ‘‘Nissan Monozukuri Caravan’’, a unique educational program developed for elementary schools, to Tochigi and Fukuoka Prefectures.
The Monozukuri Caravan is one of Nissan’s corporate citizenship initiatives. Drawing on Nissan’s monozukuri expertise in vehicle manufacturing, the program is designed to introduce elementary schools students to the world of manufacturing.
The experiential program allows students to explore the world of auto making in the classroom. The Caravan comprises a 90-minute lesson delivered in two sessions. First, the students learn about process improvement (Kaizen) using assembly blocks. In the second session, the students get to experience monozukuri first-hand as they come into contact with actual automotive parts and tools under the supervision of experienced vehicle assemblers.
Initiated in 2007 in Kanagawa Prefecture, the program developed for 5th grade students, has reached out to 4,700 students in 49 schools. The success of the Kanagawa program has led Nissan to expand the program to Tochigi and Fukuoka Prefectures, where its manufacturing facilities are located.
The Monozukuri Caravan arrived in schools in Tochigi Prefecture on May 9, followed by Fukuoka Prefecture on June 19. Within the 2008 fiscal year, the Monozukuri Caravan will visit 100 schools in both prefectures. In Kanagawa Prefecture, the program will continue to be held across 70 schools.
Nissan’s corporate citizenship initiatives are founded on three pillars – education, environment and humanitarian efforts.
