Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH enables in-car use of iPhone
The iPod® Interface Kit allows the music functions to be controlled via the car’s multifunction steering wheel, while the telephone functions are taken care of by the Mercedes-Benz Bluetooth® telephone module (HFP). A further development stage will see the launch of a special phone holder.
Customers wanting to enjoy the extensive multimedia functions of Apple’s new iPhone® while in their car require an optimal connection to the on-board electronics and to the hands-free system. Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH offers several solutions. At the time of the iPhone® launch (end of 2007 in ) the current Mercedes-Benz iPod® Interface Kit will allow the music functions to be activated. The Mercedes-Benz Bluetooth® telephone module (HFP), also already available, connects the iPhone® to the car’s hands-free system , without physically having to hook up the device to the vehicle. This means that the customer can use the iPhone® both to listen to music and to make phone calls. The sound is output over the on-board loudspeakers, and the functions are conveniently controlled using the multifunction steering wheel.
A further development stage* will see the introduction of a special phone holder, ensuring perfect integration into the on-board architecture. Here too operation via the multifunction steering wheel helps enhance safety since the driver’s hands stay on the steering wheel. The telephone status is indicated in the on-board display - it couldn’t be safer or more convenient. When the iPhone is connected via a phone holder, a connection is automatically established to the car’s aerial, ensuring optimum reception . The iPhone’s battery is also continuously charged as long as the device remains plugged into the holder, ensuring that the phone is always fully charged.
Fitting the holder is extremely simple. It latches into place in the centre console, without the use of tools. All that is required is that the vehicle is factory-fitted with the optional extra pre-installation for mobile phone with interface (Code 386).
* Market launch scheduled for spring 2008
