Maybach Sneak Peek Ahead Of This Week's Australian International Motor Show

10 October 2005 -- Bathurst 1000 race fans have had a sneak preview of the biggest star of the Australian International Motor Show, before its official unveiling at Sydney’s Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre on Thursday (13 October). The $8 million Maybach Exelero concept car completed a series of high-speed demonstration laps around the Mount Panorama circuit on Sunday (9 October) in the hands of five-time world motorcycle champion Mick Doohan.

The Exelero, which had recorded a top speed of 351km/h on a speed bowl in Italy, exceeded 240km/h down Mt Panorama’s Conrod straight – a speed Mick Doohan described as “cruisey”.

“For a big heavy car, it’s got a huge amount of get-up-and-go, so reaching that speed on Conrod was effortless,” said Doohan. “I could have gone a lot faster.”

The Exelero is powered by a 5.9-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine producing 515kW of power and 1020Nm of torque – enough to push its 2.66 tonnes of kerb weight from rest to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds.

Its dramatically aerodynamic shape reprises Maybach’s legendary streamlined record-breaking car of the 1940s.

The new car is based on the mechanical architecture of the Maybach 57 limousine – but the Exelero is 16cm wider and even longer at almost 5.9 metres.

The Maybach Exelero heads an exceptional line-up of cars making their Asia-Pacific debuts at the Australian International Motor Show on Thursday.

The line-up includes:
Jaguar’s all-new XK sports car
Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage sports car
• The Lexus LF-C concept
Peugeot’s beautiful 407 coupe
Alfa Romeo’s sexy Brera coupe
Lamborghini’s Gallardo Spyder
• And Mitsubishi’s make-or-break 380 sedan.

The official opening and media preview begins:

Thursday, 13 October, 8am
Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre
