Upgraded Holden Astra Hatch, Wagon and Coupe Get Brand New Engine with More Power, Greater Fuel Economy

2007-04-20 -- Australia’s best-selling European import, the Holden Astra, now has a more powerful and fuel efficient 1.8-litre engine at its heart. The popular Holden Astra CD and Holden Astra CDX hatch, wagon and coupe models feature a new 1.8 XER engine that delivers more refined and responsive performance and greater fuel economy.

The high-tech powerplant produces 103kW* of peak power @ 6300rpm ─ up 11 kilowatts or 11 per cent from the previous Astra 1.8-litre engine.

It also produces more usable torque - up 5Nm to 175 Nm on manual and 170Nm on automatic variants over a wider rev range. This translates into lively performance even at low engine speeds. Holden Astra’s advanced 1.8 XER engine is also more fuel efficient.

The three-door coupe and five-door hatch models return 7.4 litres/100 kilometres (manual) and 7.8 litres/100km (automatic). This compares to 7.8 and 8.2 litres respectively from the previous engine.

The Holden Astra wagon (CD and CDX) returns 7.4 litres/100 kilometres (manual) and 7.9 litres/100 kilometres (automatic). This compares to 7.8 (CD) and 7.9 (CDX) litres and 8.3 litres respectively.

The new engine complies with Euro IV emission standards and emission levels are nine or 10 grams per kilometre lower than the previous unit depending on model.

The extra power and torque, reduced fuel consumption and emissions come courtesy of technology highlights such as continuously adjustable camshafts, a two-step intake manifold and lightweight yet stronger construction.

Pricing for all Holden Astra CD and Holden Astra CDX models remains unchanged.

GM Holden's Small Car Marketing Manager, Teresa Basile , said the more powerful and economical 1.8-litre engine would further boost the popularity of Holden’s second biggest-selling nameplate.

“Now we have cutting edge engine technology to match Astra’s sharp good looks right across the range,” Ms Basile said.

“Buyers are spoilt for choice between four exceptional engines (1.8 and 2.2-litre petrol, 2.0-litre turbo and 1.9-litre turbo diesel) and four stunning body styles (three-door coupe, five-door hatch, five-door wagon and retractable hardtop convertible).

“Holden Astra is clearly one of the most complete small car ranges in Australia.”

Holden Astra also takes on a fresh face for 2007, with a distinctive new front fascia, headlamp and grille treatments.

New upper radiator grille styling with a broader chrome strip combines with chrome radiator bars and a more pronounced V-shaped profile.

In addition, Holden Astra CDX and Holden Astra CDTi Turbo Diesel models now offer new 10-spoke alloy wheels.

All upgraded 2007 Holden Astra models share the driver’s car DNA and structural stability that give them the composed feel of a much larger car.
