Exclusive Opportunity to See Collegiate Advanced Technology Vehicles Equipped with Biodiesel, Ethanol and Hydrogen in Action

2008-05-07 -- The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and General Motors (GM) will host a behind-the-scenes opportunity to see the vehicles from the collegiate engineering competition Challenge X: Crossover to Sustainable Mobility in action.

The event is May 15, at Old Bridge Township Motorsports Park and is a stop on a road rally from New Jersey to Washington, D.C. Seventeen Chevrolet Equinoxes have been re-engineered by student teams using a range of cutting-edge clean vehicle technologies such as hybrid, plug-in or fuel cell propulsion systems. The vehicles are powered by alternative fuels such as biodiesel, ethanol and hydrogen.

Challenge X is a unique multi-year engineering competition that provides 17 university teams from across North America real-world engineering experience. The activity is managed by DOE's Argonne National Laboratory and the teams follow the GM global vehicle development process to create advanced propulsion technology solutions that will increase energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact and fundamentally change the way we power our automobiles.

By participating in the Challenge X program, the students gain real-world engineering skills and hands-on learning to better prepare them for a future career in engineering. The competition also helps seed the automotive industry with engineers who are committed to advancing vehicle technology to address the energy and transportation challenges of the 21st Century. Since the competition began in 2004, hundreds of Challenge X graduates have found jobs with automakers and automotive suppliers.

Additional information about Challenge X is available on the Web at challengex.org.
