CAW, Chrysler Open New Action Centre for Laid-Off Workers
TORONTO, May 21, 2008 -- The Canadian Auto Workers union and Chrysler Canada are hosting the official launch of a new action centre which will provide enhanced services and programs for the more than 1,000 workers laid off with the third shift closure at the Brampton Assembly Plant.
Workers and others will gather at the centre for the ceremony and open house today, May 21.
The Action Centre is the project of a joint Adjustment Committee with financial support from the provincial Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, and its' Adjustment Advisory Program. The CAW also negotiated a $250,000 contribution from Chrysler for the Brampton adjustment project. The centre will offer Chrysler workers specialized help with a wide range of counselling, retraining, job search and other adjustment needs.
CAW President Buzz Hargrove stressed that auto workers and their families are reeling from the devastating job losses in the industry. "It's essential that we pull together to provide supports for the tough transitions ahead."
