Blaupunkt Velocity Speakers: A Delight to the Ears
Technical sophistication in outstanding products
April 2008 -- The new 2008 Velocity speaker models made by Bosch subsidiary Blaupunkt show off a rich range of innovations and technological advances. As for the amplifier series that belongs to this line, there will also be two independent product lines for the speakers: Velocity Vantage, the technically demanding speakers and the high-end components in the so-called Velocity Pro class.
Blaupunkt Velocity Speakers: Technical sophistication in outstanding products
Highlights:
· Speaker systems in the high-end class of the Velocity Pro line
· Better power output due to lower impedance
· Newly designed components for the Velocity entry-level segment
Blaupunkt has added high-end coaxial systems to the Velocity speaker series for all those people who have to deal with a serious lack of installation space in their vehicles or want their upgrade installation to go as smoothly as possible. These speakers are available in the five most popular sizes between 100 and 165 millimeters in diameter. And the line even includes a classic 6x9-inch coaxial chassis. Thus, the new range offers a solution for a wide variety of different vehicle models.
Reduced impedance and high fidelity
A special feature of all the Velocity speakers is the new reduction of their impedance from four to just three ohms, allowing amplifiers to operate at peak form and get more performance from the output stage. To achieve a comparable effect at four ohms, it would be necessary to have outputs with at least 50 percent more power. The resistor reduced to three ohms in the new Velocity speaker is a successful compromise because the additional amps that usually drive speakers in this class are easily able to cope with two-ohm impedance. Serial radios on the other hand are still on the safe side with three-ohm impedance and can mobilize greater power reserves.
In contrast to many competitor products, baskets with air vents for the voice coil have already been standard for the Velocity speakers for a long time. Thanks to the considerably improved heat dissipation, this design principle provides for high electrical power handling and guarantees minimum compression losses even for large cone excursion. The pay-off for the extra attention to detail: high fidelity that provides correspondingly precise music reproduction.
Blaupunkt Velocity Speakers
Despite the attractive pricing, the new Velocity coaxial speakers models are very sophisticated in terms of technology. What is generally the case for component speakers also applies to the coaxial chassis here. They are also equipped with – in this case extremely compact – external 12-dB frequency crossovers instead of simple coupling capacitor. And all the tweeters are fitted with silk domes to reproduce a pleasantly soft, agreeable sound quality.
New subwoofers with a special enclosure design
The Velocity line is completed by four subwoofer chassis measuring up to 380 millimeters in diameter with a maximum power handling capacity of up to 1400 watts. The relatively compact 200-mm woofer is a new addition to the line and was made to fit into the standard installation locations in many vehicles. As in the Pro range, they also feature two-ohm dual voice coils to adjust the connection impedance from four right down to one ohm.
Customers more interested in ready-made subwoofer enclosures are rewarded in the new Velocity line with a particularly attractive enclosure design. Round shapes and the use of aluminum composite materials are reminiscent – not entirely without intention – of the Velocity 2Go all-rounder. As a visual treat, the transparent protective arms in front of the woofers and the Velocity logo can be lit up in dark blue. The Vb 800 (with 2x200-mm woofers, a maximum of 1200 watts of peak power handling capacity) and the Vb 1000 (2x250-mm bass, 1600 watts) versions are available as passive systems to guarantee an impressive bass foundation with little installation effort.
Velocity Pro – High-tech components for individualists
The Velocity Pro range focuses primarily on three component systems – the VPc 542 Pro, the VPc 652 Pro and the VPc 662 Pro. They are available in the most popular sizes of 130mm, 158mm and 165mm and are equipped with streamlined aluminum diecast baskets as well as the ventilation for the voice coils already mentioned. The cones made of the carbon/fiberglass material are very light and sturdy, which also makes them very low-resonance. The chassis are combined with the legendary 28-mm tweeters with Teteron domes, whose symmetrical magnet system works together with specially attenuated coupling volumes to produce a very special kind of sound brilliance. It is not for nothing that this design has received outstanding acclaim from professionals in the industry and in tests. Sound purists will appreciate the fact that the installation and operation of the tweeters is possible with or without the cover grilles. The corresponding frequency crossovers in the Velocity Pro line are equipped with an elegant aluminum housing and are a good visual match for the Pro amplifiers of the same name.
With a peak handling capacity of 400 to 480 watts, the Velocity Pro components attain extremely high values; and that applies in particular to the two subwoofer variants, the VPw 1200 Pro and the VPw 1500 Pro, measuring 300, or 380 mm in diameter respectively. Their cones made of deeply drawn polypropylene have additional embossing that looks like the Velocity Pro grille design. This embossing makes the cones particularly sturdy, which they have to be with peak power handling capacities up to 4800 watts. Connected to such powerful output stages as the Velocity VA 1500 Pro, the two woofers provide a big pay-off with a very powerful bass foundation – with a comforting massage included.
