Blaupunkt "Dual View" from Bosch Provides Separate Information for Driver and Passenger
One screen for two programs
February 4, 2008 -- The new Blaupunkt "Dual View" display from Bosch increases in-vehicle functionality. It is able to display two different programs on one monitor. The viewing angle determines which of the two programs can be seen on the display. The driver, for example, can track the visual navigation information, while the front-seat passenger can watch a film on the same screen. In other words, two different video programs run on one and the same screen.

Highlights:
· "Dual View" display presents two different programs
· Viewing angle determines what is seen
· Space required remains the same
Bosch engineers are currently preparing the start of production of a screen with a diagonal of 8 inches (approx. 20 cm), which is scheduled for a high-volume series in vehicles made by a European automotive manufacturer for 2009.
Images shown at the same time
The "Dual View" monitor consists of a backlit color active-matrix display (TFT-LCD: Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) and a special mask that is laid over the liquid crystal layer. The images for the viewing angle from the right and the left are shown at the same time, but are specifically distributed on adjacent pixel columns. Depending on the viewing angle, the mask shows only those pixel columns that make up the right or the left picture. As a result, the viewer sees an image composed of every second pixel so that the horizontal display resolution is cut in half – which means that "Dual View" visualizes each of the two images with 400 x 480 pixels from a rated resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Nevertheless, the next generation of the "Dual View" display will display each image with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.
If the display is viewed from one of the two angles, only the image dedicated to that angle will be seen. The mask must comply exactly with the requirements and also be positioned with absolute precision. The type of mask also influences the brightness of the display.
Two programs on one monitor
"Dual View" from Bosch offers double functionality where only a simple display was available to date. Thus, it is now possible to provide the front-seat passenger not only with a view of the navigation recommendations, but with an individual entertainment program, consisting of video films, TV programs or radio menus, without having to install a second monitor in the vehicle, which would prove difficult in most cases anyway as far as space and safety are concerned. The "Dual View" unit takes up no more space than a conventional monitor. As a result, automotive manufacturers will be able to offer a screen in conventional dimensions as the standard and "Dual View" as the option.
