AAA Statement on National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission Report
Washington, D.C., Jan. 15, 2008 -- Statement by Robert L. Darbelnet, President and CEO, AAA:
AAA looks forward to thoroughly reviewing the Commission’s report. We have been saying for some time now that American needs a new vision for how the nation’s transportation system is planned, funded and implemented. The Commission is making a strong recommendation for change and we applaud its effort.
AAA will review the Commission’s recommendations through the lens of our Motorists’ Bill of Rights (PDF). Among the recommendations that stand out as being consistent with the Bill of Rights are ensuring transportation investments are based on clearly identified needs with outcomes tied to performance standards, and ensuring that all users bear a fair and proportionate share of financing the system.
We recognize that motorists will be asked to pay more for transportation going forward, and we are not surprised to see a significant funding increase recommended by the Commission. Based on some of our own research, we believe the motoring public may well be willing to pay more, provided they trust that the money is invested responsibly in programs and projects that will provide enhanced safety, improved mobility and system reliability.
We believe the Commission’s report will be a positive contribution to the ongoing debate about the future of the nation’s transportation system.
