Continental Advent Calendar
Win great prizes every day by answering questions on road safety correctly
Hanover, November 28, 2007 – Now what was the answer to that question? Does double speed mean fourfold braking distance? And what should children remember when they are on their way to visit friends in the evening? Continental AG's Advent Calendar refreshes your general knowledge of road safety with 24 tough questions – twelve each for adults and children. The quiz starts on December 1st on Continental's internet homepage. There are great prizes to be won every day, including an iPod Shuffle, a PC football game, a cotton candy machine and the latest Harry Potter book. The main prize of the draw will be a digital SLR.
Even those who do not receive a prize are winners. The aim of the online game is to teach children important rules of road safety and help adults refresh the knowledge they acquired when taking their driving test.
The international automotive supplier Continental has championed road safety for many years. Indeed, according to the German Federal Statistical Office 327,984 people were involved in road traffic accidents in 2006 alone; there were 5,091 fatalities, including 136 children. Every 16 minutes a child is involved in a traffic accident. More than half of these accidents happen on the way to or from school. For this reason, Continental has already invested over €450,000 in projects aimed at making it school routes safer. Recently launched, the internet-based school route planner, www.schulwegplaner.de, proved an immediate success. Parents and schools can use this tool to plan the safest route to school.
According to Dieter Quentin, President of the Association of Driving Instructors of Lower Saxony: "The ingenious thing about the Continental Advent Calendar is that a game is used to teach children how to behave in road traffic. Adults also benefit from the questions. My experience tells me that over the years, many adults forget what they had to learn for their driving test. Cyclists and pedestrians, too, are often unsure of the correct behavior in traffic."
By the way: If the speed of the car is doubled, the braking distance really is four times as long. And in the dark, children should wear light-colored clothing, ideally with reflectors. This makes it easier for other road users to see them. Has your appetite been whetted for more? Then check out what you know at: www.continental-corporation.com.
