1,400 Young People Start Their Apprenticeship at Bosch
· Number of apprentices up slightly on the prior-year level
· A total of 4,400 apprentices across Germany, more than 6,000 worldwide
October 12, 2007, STUTTGART – Some 1,400 apprentices started their working life at Bosch sites around Germany in the fall of 2007, up slightly on the already high number of the previous year. Bosch also expects to be able to keep the number of apprenticeship positions at this level next year. "High-quality training is the foundation for a good start to working life. That is why, as part of our social commitment, we have been training more apprentices than we actually need for many years now," explains Dr. Wolfgang Malchow, whose responsibilities as member of the board of management and director of industrial relations include human resources. In 2007 alone, 1,110 apprentices will find regular employment following successful completion of their occupational training. In Germany, Bosch is currently training around 4,400 young people, who can choose from over 40 different careers. Worldwide, the company provides occupational training for more than 6,000 young people.
Share of young women is encouraging
The share of female apprentices is encouraging. Of the total number of new apprentices, the share of young women comes to 21.4 percent. This figure is above average for the automotive industry. "Bosch pursues a wide range of campaigns for young women to further their interest in technology. More and more, we are noticing the positive effects of initiatives such as Girls' Day, where young women are given an insight into technical careers, or femtec, a university career center for women studying engineering and sciences," says Malchow. The majority of school-leavers hired by Bosch start with a tenth-grade school-leaving certificate (60 percent), but apprentices also include school-leavers with a university-entrance qualification (28 percent) or with a ninth-grade school-leaving certificate (12 percent).
