Visteon Named Innovations 2007 Design and Engineering Award Honoree for In-Vehicle Wireless Charging
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich., Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Visteon Corporation (NYSE:VC) recently earned recognition for technology that provides a convenient way to make sure batteries for mobile phones, MP3 players or PDAs are always charged and ready to go. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) named Visteon an International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Innovations 2007 Design and Engineering Awards honoree. The award was announced earlier this month at an international media preview for the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Visteon will demonstrate the technology at CES, Jan. 8-11, 2007, in Las Vegas.
This in-vehicle technology eliminates the need to have dedicated power cords for each portable device in the vehicle. The user simply places the device on Visteon's wireless charger, and power is transferred by electromagnetic induction from the charging surface to the user's portable device at a rate comparable to a plug-in power cord.
"Any driver or passenger who uses an electronic device, such as a mobile phone or MP3 player, would benefit from the convenience of this innovation," said Steve Meszaros, vice president, Visteon electronics product group. "Based on consumer studies that Visteon conducted in several countries, people are willing to invest in the convenience of not having to deal with charging cords in a vehicle."
The wireless charger contains intelligence that can determine if an object is in close proximity to the charger, and whether the object can be charged.
In addition to being featured at Visteon's exhibit, the new wireless charging technology will be displayed by the CEA during the January electronics show at the Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase and at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, Booth #68747. Products entered in the Innovations 2007 Design and Engineering Awards program were judged by a panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the trade media to honor outstanding design and engineering in cutting-edge consumer electronics products. The program is sponsored by CEA, producer of the International CES -- the world's largest consumer technology trade show. It is endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), which is committed to advancing the industrial design profession through education, information, community and advocacy.
