A New Angle: Driver-Ed as Summer Camp

Tagged:
WASHINGTON, June 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Increasingly, summer camp is becoming a time for personal development, not just badminton and fireside chats. And now, a whole new angle -- a camp for safe driving skills. The timing is appropriate: summer is the deadliest time for teen drivers.

WHAT: Taking the Lead, a partnership to assist young drivers in the Pittsburgh, PA-area that is so unique that some parents are driving their kids in from out-of-state. The full year-long program is based on the Driving Skills for Life (http://www.drivingskillsforlife.com/) program and will culminate with a three-day free instruction and driving camp with professional driving instructors.

WHO: Ford Motor Company Fund (philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company) and Governors Highway Safety Association

WHY: It's going to be a story this summer, whether we like it or not. Why? Because vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens in America -- nearly 7,000 die annually, with the bulk of crashes coming when school gets out. Studies demonstrate that teen crash rates decline considerably as young drivers gain experience behind the wheel. The free DSFL program helps young drivers improve skills in the four areas that play a role in more than 60 percent of teen vehicle crashes:
- Hazard recognition
- Vehicle handling
- Space management
- Speed management

HOW: Attend the camp and cover any segment of Ford's Driving Skills for Life national campaign, including participating in the actual driving instruction.
